Designed by Kai Kristiansen for Schou Andersen Møbelfabrik, the model 42 chair is one of the most recognizable projects of mid-twentieth-century Danish design. Introduced in the early 1960s, it stands out for the unique construction of the backrest, which combines an enveloping shape with a visually light structure. This pair retains the characteristics that have made the model a benchmark of Scandinavian modernism.
The slightly curved, upholstered backrest is supported by two wooden side elements that extend to form small armrests. Their inclined profile follows the position of the arms and gives the chair an instantly recognizable silhouette. The upholstered seat matches the light-colored upholstery of the backrest, creating a delicate contrast with the warm tones of the wooden frame.
Kai Kristiansen dedicated much of his design research to the relationship between ergonomics and construction, developing chairs capable of offering comfort through careful use of form. In the model 42, the arrangement of the backrest and armrests reflects this sensibility, while the tilted rear legs contribute to defining the chair’s dynamic profile.
