Key Details
The Fresco line produced by G Plan represents one of the most recognizable moments in 1960s British design, when storage furniture began to evolve beyond the traditional sideboard, integrating different functions within a single structure.
In this highboard, teak dominates the composition, enhanced by a rich and regular grain that runs across the entire front. However, the surfaces are not treated as a uniform block: drawers, doors, and open compartments create a dynamic whole, playing on the alternation between solid and void and the variety of storage solutions.
Particularly interesting is the drop-down compartment on the left side which, once opened, transforms into a practical bar cabinet (or a writing desk). Inside, shelves and compartments further expand the furniture's functionality, reflecting the attention to daily use typical of English design of the period.
The handles carved into the wood, discreetly integrated into the doors and drawers, contribute to the formal cleanliness of the whole without interrupting the continuity of the grain.
Despite its significant dimensions, the structure appears surprisingly light. The slender legs and the characteristic curved crossbars connecting the supports lift the volume off the ground and lighten its visual presence, giving the furniture an almost architectural elegance.
It is a piece that manages to combine storage capacity, versatility, and construction quality, maintaining the sober refinement that made the Fresco series one of the most appreciated productions of post-war British design.
