Telephone bench designed by Kai Kristiansen for Aksel Kjersgaard, 1960s

This bench designed by Kai Kristiansen has a very typical approach to Danish design of the 1960s: stripping away all the superfluous until only what is truly necessary remains. The result is a piece of furniture that appears extremely simple, but is built with a precision that emerges especially when observed closely.

The structure is slender, well-proportioned, almost graphic in the way it defines space. The legs connect to the seat seamlessly, without rigid interruptions, while the teak covers the entire volume with tight grain and shades that vary slightly depending on the light.

Many benches produced by Aksel Kjersgaard in the 1960s were designed for entrances and过渡 spaces, where the furniture had to be functional but also capable of visually lightening the space. This one maintains that exact quality: it can work in an entrance, next to a free wall, or at the foot of a bed without ever seeming cumbersome. Even when empty, it retains a very defined presence, thanks to the balance between structure, material, and proportions.
