Compass chair by Kai Kristiansen, 1960s

The Compass chair, designed by Kai Kristiansen, takes its name from the distinctive inclination of its legs, which resemble the opening of a compass. A detail that defines the entire structure and gives the seat an instantly recognizable profile, especially when viewed from the side.

The wooden frame features slanted front uprights that continue upwards, forming the backrest supports. The latter is slightly curved and upholstered in cream-colored fabric, as is the padded seat. The space between the two elements leaves part of the structure exposed, lightening the overall design and highlighting the chair’s unique construction.

Kai Kristiansen is one of the leading figures of mid-20th-century Danish design, known for his ability to develop functional furniture through original structural solutions. In his projects, the relationship between ergonomics and woodworking plays a central role, as is also demonstrated by this seat, in which the inclination of the uprights helps define both the shape and the position of the backrest.

Thanks to its compact size and integrated armrests, the Compass can be used as a desk chair, a dining chair, or as a standalone piece in a bedroom or study. The light upholstery creates a delicate contrast with the wood and makes it easy to integrate even into contemporary settings.
