Dunvegan Sideboard by McIntosh, United Kingdom
The Dunvegan sideboard produced by McIntosh plays on a balance rather typical of 1960s British design: alternating solid surfaces and transparencies within a single compact volume. Teak builds the load-bearing structure of the cabinet, while the glass front introduces a second, lighter and more open reading.
On one side, the wooden door completely encloses the volume, maintaining a more reserved and functional area. The rest of the front, however, opens like a true display case, revealing the interior. This is a setup that makes the piece of furniture less rigid than a traditional sideboard, while maintaining a very orderly structure.
The relationship between wood and glass is what truly defines the piece. Teak provides continuity and warmth, while the transparent surface lightens the overall impression and allows the cabinet to change its appearance depending on what it contains. The perception in space also changes: more closed and compact on one side, more open and dynamic on the other.
It is a piece of furniture that works particularly well through contrast, without seeking decorative effects, but relying on simple construction and a very direct use of materials.
